Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has dedicated her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to the people of Venezuela and U.S. President Donald Trump, praising his “decisive support” for her country’s pro-democracy movement.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Machado wrote:
- “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause! We are on the threshold of victory, and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve freedom and democracy.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Machado as the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner on October 10, 2025, citing her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Machado, 58, has been in hiding for the past year following disputed elections that President Nicolás Maduro is widely accused of rigging. Barred from contesting the election herself, she threw her support behind ex-diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who is regarded by much of the international community as the legitimate winner.
A vocal critic of Maduro’s regime, Machado has openly supported President Trump’s hardline stance on Venezuela, including the U.S. naval deployment near the country, describing it as a “necessary measure” toward restoring democracy.

Following her announcement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reshared Machado’s post on X, highlighting her tribute to President Trump.
Several Venezuelan opposition figures also congratulated Machado, including former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, who wrote:
- “May this recognition be another boost to achieve peace, and for our Venezuela to leave behind suffering and regain the freedom and democracy for which it has fought for so many years.”
Machado’s Nobel win marks a historic moment for Venezuela’s opposition movement, as international attention once again turns to the nation’s long-standing struggle for democracy and human rights.
