Lagos NLC Pushes for ₦150,000 Minimum Wage Amid Rising Cost of Living.

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new minimum wage of ₦150,000 for workers in the state, citing the rising cost of living and recent wage reviews in Imo and Ebonyi states.

Speaking on Thursday, the Lagos NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sesi, stressed that workers currently earn ₦85,000, which she described as insufficient given Lagos’ high cost of housing, transportation, feeding, and utilities.

  • “The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space,” she stated.

Sesi further noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu now has no excuse not to raise workers’ salaries, emphasizing that Lagos workers deserve a better wage and decent working conditions in line with present economic realities.

She also expressed optimism that more state governments would follow the footsteps of Imo and Ebonyi, both of which recently increased their minimum wages.

Recall that Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo announced a wage raise from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000, while the Ebonyi Government increased its workers’ minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000.
