Tragedy struck at the busy Mandillas area of Lagos Island on Wednesday after a fight over the sharing of ₦8,000 led to the death of a trader, Sodiq Ibrahim.
According to eyewitnesses, the clash broke out between Ibrahim and his colleague, Ebuka Adindu, both members of the “Oso Ahia” group — hustlers who bring customers to shops in exchange for commissions. Trouble started when a shop owner gave them ₦8,000 to share, but disagreement over how to split the money quickly escalated into violence.

Reports revealed that during the altercation, Ibrahim stabbed Adindu with a bottle before attempting to flee. Adindu, in retaliation, pursued him with a knife and stabbed him fatally. Ibrahim bled to death on the scene.
The incident caused a temporary disruption in the Balogun market, with shops briefly shutting down. However, business resumed on Thursday.

While social media speculations suggested an ethnic clash, traders and the Lagos State Police Command dismissed such claims. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Adindu, who also injured himself, is currently in the hospital under arrest and will be prosecuted once discharged.
Traders further emphasized that the dispute was purely financial, not ethnic. “It was just about the ₦8,000 commission, nothing tribal,” one trader said, adding that this was the first violent incident in the market in recent years.
