Lagos Blames Illegal Constructions, Waste Disposal for Lekki Flooding.

September 24, 2025-Published by Cyril

The Lagos State Government has attributed the heavy flooding in Lekki and Victoria Island on Tuesday to illegal constructions and indiscriminate waste disposal, which worsened the impact of the downpour.

Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a statement on his official X (Twitter) account, where he sympathized with residents whose homes, shops, and vehicles were submerged.

The flash floods, triggered by the early morning heavy rainfall, left major roads in Lekki, Ajah, and Victoria Island impassable for over seven hours, crippling human and vehicular movement. Many commuters were stranded late into the night, with some unable to reach their homes until past midnight.

Wahab explained that while Lagos, being a coastal city, is naturally prone to flooding, infractions such as illegal constructions on floodplains and dumping of refuse into drainage channels worsened the situation.

  • “Around the House on the Rock church, the flooding was linked to illegal constructions on floodplains and waste dumped in drains. These activities worsen flooding and must stop,” Wahab stated.

He further clarified that in Kusenla, the issue was technical, as the downstream was 1.2 meters higher than the existing drainage channel. The government has already awarded a project that includes the construction of a pumping station to tackle the challenge.

The Commissioner assured that the government has continued to invest in drainage infrastructure, desilting projects, and enforcement of environmental laws to minimize flooding. He also pledged that illegal structures and unauthorized land reclamations without environmental clearance would be removed.

He urged Lagosians to cooperate by keeping the environment clean, avoiding refuse dumping, and stopping construction on floodplains, stressing that community support was vital in achieving a flood-free Lagos.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) assured residents that there was no cause for alarm. NEMA’s Southwest Coordinator, Tunde Mohammed, confirmed that officers were monitoring the situation closely.

  • “There is no cause for alarm yet. The situation is very much under control, and our officers are monitoring closely,” he assured.

The floods have since receded, but residents are calling on the government for long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
