Tensions are rising within the Labour Party (LP) as the Julius Abure-led faction has accused Governor Alex Otti of sidelining core party members in Abia State political appointments.
Speaking during a closed-door meeting in Abia on Wednesday, Prince Ndubueze, Chairman of the LP faction loyal to Abure, alleged that loyal and foundational party members have been excluded from key positions in Otti’s administration.
Ndubueze claimed that the Governor’s political group, Abia Arise, has taken over the benefits of the LP’s 2023 electoral success in the state. According to him, “Not a single Commissioner in Otti’s cabinet was nominated by the Labour Party, despite our immense contributions to his victory.”

He further alleged that Governor Otti and Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate, are engaging in anti-party activities, sidelining the party’s core leadership.
“The recent charity tours by Mr. Peter Obi in northern Nigeria were done without the involvement or consultation of the party leadership. These moves do nothing to unite the Labour Party family,” Ndubueze said.

On the recent Supreme Court judgment that declared Julius Abure’s leadership invalid, the Abia factional Chairman argued that the ruling did not remove Abure as LP National Chairman, suggesting the leadership dispute is far from over.
The internal crisis within the Labour Party continues to deepen, raising concerns about its unity and political future ahead of the next general elections.
