ABUJA – June 14, 2025:
Veteran Nollywood actor and former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has openly accused Peter Obi of betraying him during the ongoing internal crisis rocking the party.
In a viral interview with Symfoni, trending across social media platforms since Saturday, Okonkwo, who exited the Labour Party in February 2025, described Obi’s recent actions as a deep personal and political betrayal.
“If there is anybody that betrayed the other, I can say it emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me,” Okonkwo stated.
⚠ What Sparked the Fallout?
- Okonkwo said Peter Obi ignored his advice by returning to support the Julius Abure-led LP faction, which he described as “undemocratic” and “agents of the government.”
- According to him, Obi was misled by claims that INEC had recognized the Abure faction. Despite Okonkwo’s warning, Obi publicly visited and endorsed the group.
“Obi was lied to… but I told him even if INEC had accepted them, integrity should matter more,” Okonkwo said.
He added that his warnings were both public and private, stressing that dealing with Abure’s faction could destroy Obi’s political credibility.
💬 Okonkwo: “I Refused to Swallow My Words”
- The actor-politician emphasized that he refused to follow Obi back into what he considered a flawed alliance.
- “I called everyone in our inner circle and told them I wouldn’t return with Obi to a group I had already condemned publicly,” he said.
Okonkwo also revealed that members of the faction mocked him with a video showing Obi endorsing the same group he had cautioned against.
“They sent me a clip of Obi at Abure’s office to mock me. That hurt deeply,” he added.

🧍♂ Aftermath: Obi’s Attempt at Neutrality
Okonkwo claims Obi only reverted to a neutral stance after INEC distanced itself from Abure, but by then, the damage was already done.
“I told him neutrality was no longer an option; something concrete had to be done.”
⚖ The Bigger Picture
This fallout highlights the deepening cracks within the Labour Party, with prominent voices like Kenneth Okonkwo exiting over concerns of integrity, leadership, and internal democracy.
