Kebbi South Senator Slams Federal Government Over Banditry Amid Schoolgirl Rescue.

Senator Garba Musa of Kebbi South has sharply criticized the Federal Government’s handling of banditry, describing ongoing security operations as ineffective and opaque.

Speaking after the release of 24 kidnapped schoolgirls from Maga community in his constituency, Garba expressed mixed emotions—relief over the girls’ safe return and frustration at the government’s approach.

  • “I’m very happy and sad at the same time,” he said.
  • “Happy that the 24 girls from Maga, in my constituency, were released safe and healthy without molestation. But we must reflect. We know who these bandits are, where they are, and what they want. So why are half-measures still being applied while our communities suffer daily?”

The senator urged the government to either negotiate decisively or combat the bandits fully, questioning why authorities continue to operate in secrecy and delay decisive action.

Following a similar rescue in Kwara State, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, explained that the operation used a non-kinetic approach. He stated that the DSS, military, police, and intelligence agencies monitored the kidnappers in real time before securing the girls’ release, ensuring the operation avoided direct firefights.

  • “The abductors complied to avoid the consequences,” Onanuga said, describing the mission as swift, clean, and life-preserving. He emphasized that direct military assaults often risk civilian lives, as kidnappers frequently use hostages as human shields.

The senator’s remarks, alongside Onanuga’s explanation, have sparked public debate, with many Nigerians questioning whether government actions amount to negotiation or tacit compromise with bandits.
