Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced the renaming of two key sports institutions in memory of 22 athletes who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident while returning from the 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
The announcement was made on Sunday, June 29, in a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammed.
The accident, which occurred just 5 kilometers from Kano, devastated the state’s sports community, claiming the lives of promising young athletes who had represented Kano at the national event.
Institutions Renamed After Fallen Sports Heroes
To honour their legacy, Governor Yusuf revealed that:
- The Kano State Sports Institute will now be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute
- The Kano State Sports Commission has been renamed the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission
- “These young athletes made Kano proud. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” the statement said.
Support for Families of the Deceased
Governor Yusuf also announced a series of welfare and empowerment initiatives for the families of the deceased athletes. According to the statement:
- The state government will sponsor the education of the athletes’ children
- Widows of the deceased will be included in empowerment programmes
- Parents of unmarried victims will also benefit from state support
- Oluremi Tinubu Commended for N110 Million Donation

The governor further commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her N110 million donation to the bereaved families, describing the gesture as a “timely intervention to cushion the impact of their loss.”
A Lasting Tribute to Sports Legacy
Governor Yusuf described the fallen athletes as true heroes of Kano State, who contributed immensely to the state’s success at the National Sports Festival.
“They fought hard, brought glory to Kano, and paid the ultimate price. This renaming is a lasting tribute to their memory,” he said.
