The Kano State Government has uncovered and removed 239 ghost workers from its payroll system, with 1,334 suspicious cases still under investigation.
The discovery came following a biometric data capture and payroll verification exercise aimed at sanitizing the state’s civil service. Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), explained that the initiative is part of broader reforms to eliminate corrupt practices and ensure transparency in salary payments across the local government areas.
During a joint briefing, Ibrahim and Suleiman Wali, Special Adviser on Civil Service Matters, emphasized that the biometric capture and pay parade exercise were critical steps toward plugging loopholes that previously allowed the existence of ghost workers.
Umar Idris, Chairman of the Local Government Payroll Committee, stated that the committee was tasked with thoroughly scrutinizing salary vouchers before payment authorization. Their efforts led to the identification of 239 non-existent workers fraudulently added to the system.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has since ordered the immediate deletion of the ghost workers from the payroll, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring financial accountability.

The removal of these ghost workers is projected to save the Kano State Government over ₦27 million monthly, funds which will now be redirected towards more impactful development projects and better resource allocation.
This exercise is part of Governor Yusuf’s broader agenda to reform the civil service, strengthen financial management, and restore public trust in the government’s operations.
