The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has paid glowing tribute to late Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s judicial history.
Justice Uwais, who passed away on Friday in Abuja—just six days before his 89th birthday—was the second-longest-serving Chief Justice of Nigeria, having held office from 1995 to 2006.
In a heartfelt statement personally signed by the CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun expressed deep sorrow over the loss but thanked God for the impactful life the late jurist lived.

“Justice Uwais was an erudite jurist, visionary reformer, and a principled statesman. His contributions to constitutional law, judicial independence, and democratic governance in Nigeria will forever remain in our national memory,” the CJN stated.
- Appointed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1979, Uwais rose to become the Chief Justice of Nigeria, where he became known for his fearless defense of the rule of law, clarity of judgments, and commitment to judicial excellence.
- Even after retirement, Justice Uwais remained a public servant, notably chairing the Electoral Reform Committee, further demonstrating his devotion to national development and institutional reform.
“His life and legacy will continue to inspire generations of judges, lawyers, and public servants,” Justice Kekere-Ekun added. “He was truly a guardian of judicial honour.”
Supreme Court Pays Tribute
The Supreme Court of Nigeria also released an official statement through its Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Akande Festus, emphasizing Justice Uwais’ lasting legacy of judicial reform and excellence.
