JUST IN: Vote Counting Begins in Yaba as APC Takes Early Lead in Lagos LG Polls.

YABA, LAGOS – July 12, 2025:

Vote counting has officially begun at Polling Unit 024, Ward B in Makoko, Yaba, signaling the conclusion of the 2025 Lagos State local government elections.

Despite the smooth and peaceful conduct of the exercise, the day was marked by low voter turnout, raising concerns about voter apathy and its potential impact on the legitimacy and inclusiveness of the democratic process.

“The lack of voter enthusiasm could impact the credibility and inclusiveness of the exercise,” an election observer noted.

At Polling Unit 002, also in Ward B, officials continued to await voter participation even as counting began in nearby units. Reports from Ward F, Unit 012, Iwaya Road, indicated a similarly slow turnout, despite voting still being in progress as of press time.

However, Ward G at St. Timothy College stood out as a bright spot, with Polling Units 001 through 005 witnessing orderly and active voting, showcasing a more engaged electorate in that section of Yaba.

APC Takes Early Lead Across Lagos

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently taking the lead across all 57 local councils in Lagos State, according to early results emerging after the official close of voting at 3:00 PM.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who voted at Adeniji-Adele, Polling Unit 006, St. Stevens Nursery and Primary School, acknowledged early logistical delays but praised the overall process. He also commended residents for their peaceful conduct.

As of 4:00 PM, APC was reportedly ahead in Yaba, Somolu, Bariga, Ikeja, Agege, and Adeniji-Adele, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailing, and the Labour Party (LP) coming in third in several councils.

Adefuye: “Yaba Tuntun” Will Redefine Local Governance

APC Chairmanship candidate for Yaba LCDA, Adebayo Adefuye, described the election as smooth, peaceful, and fair, emphasizing the importance of local government elections in connecting with grassroots communities.

After casting his vote, Adefuye unveiled his development blueprint titled “Yaba Tuntun” (meaning “New Yaba”), promising a fresh start that addresses historical challenges in the council area.

  • “Local government autonomy is a game-changer. I fully support the President’s bold reforms,” Adefuye stated.

Conclusion

While the conduct of the election has been largely peaceful, the low voter turnout remains a concern for both electoral observers and stakeholders. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) continues to urge greater civic participation in future elections.
