Abuja, April 3, 2025 – The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024, governorship election. The tribunal dismissed the petition filed by Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the election results.
Tribunal’s Ruling on Edo Election
Delivering the landmark judgment in Abuja, the tribunal’s three-man panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, ruled that:
✅ The election was conducted validly by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
✅ The PDP and Ighodalo failed to prove claims of over-voting or election irregularities.
✅ The petitioners did not call relevant witnesses or properly support their case with necessary documents.
Tribunal Rejects PDP’s Over-Voting Allegation
The tribunal held that to prove over-voting, the petitioners needed to provide:
✔ Voter’s register
✔ BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) records
✔ EC8A (Polling unit result sheets)
However, the PDP and Ighodalo failed to tender these crucial documents, making their claims unsubstantiated. The court also criticized the petitioners for “dumping documents” on the tribunal without properly linking them to their claims.
Election Results and PDP’s Petition
In the 2024 governorship election, Governor Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo of PDP, who garnered 247,655 votes.

Dissatisfied with the outcome, the PDP and Ighodalo petitioned the tribunal, citing:
⚡ Over-voting in 765 polling units out of 4,519
⚡ Irregularities in result collation
⚡ Alleged reduction of figures on Form EC8A at ward and local government collation levels (EC8B)
However, the tribunal ruled that these allegations were not convincingly proven, dismissing the PDP’s petition in its entirety.
