The Federal Government has formally closed its case against Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in his ongoing terrorism trial in Abuja.
The prosecution, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Adegboyega Awomolo, announced on Thursday, after its fifth witness (PW5) concluded testimony before the Federal High Court.
Prosecution Ends with Confidence in Its Evidence
Awomolo stated that the prosecution is satisfied with the evidence presented and the exhibits tendered so far in court.
“We have called five witnesses and tendered relevant materials. Based on this, we are satisfied and hereby close our case,” he said.
Defence Plans No-Case Submission
Responding, lead defence counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the court that the defence intends to file a no-case submission—a legal move suggesting the prosecution has not proven its case and that the defendant has no case to answer.
“We will be filing our no-case submission in due course,” Agabi noted.
Background: Trial of Nnamdi Kanu
Nnamdi Kanu is facing multiple terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. Following his controversial arrest and extradition from Kenya, he has been in detention since June 2021.
Earlier in the trial, a witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) testified that the IPOB leader was not licensed by NBC to import or operate a radio transmitter, a key item linked to the prosecution’s case.
