The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially unveiled a new national school curriculum that will take effect from September 2025, reshaping how subjects are taught from Primary School through Senior Secondary (SS3).
According to the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the updated curriculum is designed to balance academic learning with practical skills to better prepare students for real-world opportunities.
Key Highlights of the New Curriculum
- Junior Secondary School (JSS1 – JSS3): Every student must take at least one trade subject to build hands-on vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
- Senior Secondary School (SS1 – SS3): Students will now have five compulsory subjects, including Digital Technologies and Citizenship & Heritage Studies.
- Primary School (P1–P6): Pupils will study between 9 and 12 subjects, with a stronger focus on basic digital literacy and pre-vocational studies.
Trade and Practical Skill Subjects Offered
The six approved practical trade subjects are:
- Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance
- Fashion Design and Garment Making
- Livestock Farming
- Beauty and Cosmetology
- Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs
- Horticulture and Crop Production
Primary School Subjects Breakdown
Primary 1–3 (9–10 subjects): English Studies, Mathematics, Nigerian Languages, Basic Science, Physical & Health Education, Religious Studies (CRS/Islamic Studies), Nigerian History, Social & Citizenship Studies, Cultural & Creative Arts (CCA), with Arabic as an optional subject.
Primary 4–6 (10–12 subjects): Includes all of the above plus Basic Science & Technology, Basic Digital Literacy, Pre-Vocational Studies, and optional French or Arabic.
Junior Secondary School (JSS1 – JSS3) Subjects
- Mathematics & Measurement
- English Language
- Integrated Science
- Digital Literacy & Coding (Python, Scratch, Robotics)
- Social Studies
- Nigerian & Foreign Languages (French/Arabic)
- Creative Arts (Drama, Music, Crafts)
- Physical & Health Education
- Senior Secondary School (SS1 – SS3) Subjects
Compulsory Subjects: English Language, General Mathematics, One Trade Subject, Citizenship & Heritage Studies, Digital Technologies.
Specialised Areas: Students choose from Sciences, Humanities, or Business.
