Jonathan: Suspension of Fubara, Lawmakers Tarnishes Nigeria’s Image & Reputatiion.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep concern over the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials in Rivers State, stating that such actions damage Nigeria’s international reputation.

Speaking as the Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan criticized the political crisis in Rivers, emphasizing that undemocratic practices by key government institutions discourage investor confidence and weaken public trust in governance.

NNPP Supports Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers

On the same day, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) backed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the deepening crisis.

NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, defended the move, arguing that:

“No responsible government will allow a situation to deteriorate before taking decisive action.”

He stressed that President Tinubu, as Nigeria’s Chief Security Officer, had access to intelligence reports not available to the public, making his intervention justifiable.

Jonathan Faults Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary

However, Jonathan maintained that the political instability in Rivers State was a failure of governance across all arms of government. He condemned the situation where a single individual could influence the judiciary, warning that such abuse of power erodes confidence in the legal system.

  • “The key actors in Nigeria—executive, legislature, judiciary—know the right thing to do but are refusing to do it. It is a clear abuse of office and power.”

He likened the crisis to an Indian proverb, stating:

  • “If someone is truly asleep, you can wake them up. But if they are pretending to sleep, waking them is extremely difficult.”
