DUTSE, JIGAWA STATE —
The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has taken disciplinary action against 239 teachers found guilty of long-term absenteeism, withholding their salaries, and demanding accountability.
The action was disclosed by SUBEB Chairman, Prof. Haruna Musa, during a press briefing held after the conclusion of a five-day teacher training programme for 250 Arabic teachers at Takur Primary School, Dutse.

According to Prof. Musa, the affected teachers were absent from their duty posts for periods ranging from two months to as long as three years, yet continued to receive monthly salaries without rendering any service.
“Some teachers were found to have completely abandoned their teaching responsibilities while still receiving government pay,” he said.
Village Head Among Offenders
A particularly shocking case highlighted was that of a primary school teacher who was turbaned as a village head, yet continued to receive salaries for over three years without teaching.
“He not only collected his regular salary but also received allowances as a village head,” Prof. Musa added.
The SUBEB boss confirmed that the individual has been ordered to refund all unearned salaries and either return to teaching or face further penalties.
Board Intensifies Education Reforms
The crackdown is part of a larger initiative to reform the basic education system in Jigawa State and restore discipline among public school teachers.
“This is a clear warning to all absentee teachers. The Board is committed to discipline, accountability, and raising the quality of education in Jigawa,” Prof. Musa declared.
Community Vigilance Encouraged
Prof. Musa also urged School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) across the 27 Local Government Areas to report cases of teacher absenteeism to SUBEB offices in their locality.
“Community members and school stakeholders must play a role in ensuring teachers fulfill their responsibilities,” he emphasized.
Plans to Recruit More Teachers
While acknowledging the shortage of qualified teachers, Prof. Musa assured that the board will soon recruit more teachers to fill existing gaps in public schools across the state.
Arabic Teachers Undergo Training
On a more positive note, Prof. Musa applauded the success of the just-concluded five-day training for Arabic teachers, which focused on computer literacy, lesson planning, and effective classroom management.
