The government of the Ivory Coast has announced a ban on all protests and rallies opposing the exclusion of key opposition leaders from the country’s October 25 presidential election.
On Thursday, the National Security Council (CNS) declared that demonstrations challenging the decisions of the Constitutional Council — which recently barred ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and opposition leader Tidjane Thiam from contesting — are now illegal and punishable under the law.

According to the CNS, since the publication of the final list of approved candidates on September 8, certain political figures have been accused of spreading false information capable of destabilizing the country. The Council stressed that the rulings of the Constitutional Council “cannot be appealed,” warning that any attempt to contest them “exposes its perpetrators to the arm of the law.”
As a result, the ministries of justice and security have been instructed to take all necessary measures to maintain order and prevent unrest, including banning opposition-led marches.
Both Gbagbo’s and Thiam’s parties had planned a joint demonstration in Abidjan this Saturday under the theme of “democracy, justice and peace.” However, government sources confirmed that the ban also applies to such gatherings.

The decision comes amid rising political tension in a country with a history of electoral violence. Opposition groups claim that dozens of their members have been abducted or arbitrarily arrested since August 1, while the government denies allegations of kidnappings, insisting that the judiciary is acting independently.
President Alassane Ouattara, 83, is seeking a fourth term and will face other approved contenders, including former ministers Jean-Louis Billon and Ahoua Don Mello, as well as ex-first lady Simone Ehivet Gbagbo and Henriette Lagou, who contested in the 2015 election.
