IPU to Hear Both Sides Before Deciding on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension, (Video).

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, that due process will be followed in reviewing her case. This follows her appeal to the IPU and United Nations (UN) over what she described as an unjust political suspension from the Nigerian Senate.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Speaks on Suspension

Speaking at the Women in Parliament session during the ongoing IPU meeting, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that her suspension was politically motivated. She claimed it was triggered by a petition she submitted against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging sexual harassment.

“I believed that submitting the petition would lead to a fair and transparent investigation, but instead, I was silenced and suspended,” she stated.

She further lamented that the suspension came with severe sanctions, including:

  • Withdrawal of security
  • Seizure of official vehicles
  • Salary stoppage
  • Restriction from the National Assembly premises
  • “For six months, I am not allowed to present myself as a senator, either locally or internationally,” she added.

Call for Global Intervention

The senator urged global democratic institutions to intervene, describing her suspension as a calculated attempt to suppress women’s participation in leadership.

“If a female senator can be treated this way in full public view, imagine what ordinary Nigerian women face every day in workplaces and universities,” she said

IPU’s Response and Next Steps

IPU President Tulia Ackson acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, stating that the parliamentary body would conduct a fair hearing.

“We have heard her concerns, and as an institution, we will take the necessary steps. However, it is important that we also listen to the other side before making any decisions, as is our custom at the IPU,” Ackson stated.
