IPOB: Freedom Fighting Is My Fundamental Right – Nnamdi Kanu Declares in Court.

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reiterated that his agitation for the freedom of the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi States is a constitutional right and not an act of terrorism, as alleged by the Federal Government.

Kanu made this claim in a statement presented in court on Tuesday, originally given during an interrogation by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos on October 15, 2015.

In the statement—now admitted as evidence—Kanu maintained that freedom fighting is not a crime anywhere in the world, including Nigeria. He emphasized that his actions are rooted in his right to self-determination, a principle protected under international and national laws.

The IPOB leader further alleged that his interrogation by the DSS was conducted without legal representation, in violation of his rights. He also denied any involvement in violence, stating that no evidence has linked him to any violent acts across the country.

The statement was read in open court by a DSS operative currently serving as the Prosecution Witness (PWAAA) for the Federal Government, following a motion by government lawyer Adegboyega Solomon, and without objection from Kanu’s legal team.

Additionally, video recordings of Kanu’s interrogation sessions were played in court and subsequently admitted as exhibits by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court.

Also presented in court were four suitcases recovered from Kanu’s hotel room at the time of his arrest in 2015. These contained personal items, including broadcast equipment used for Radio Biafra, which Kanu confirmed was established and registered in London.

He also admitted that Radio Biafra was not registered with Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), stating that he did not find it necessary to do so.

As Kanu’s trial progresses, this development adds another layer to the legal and political dimensions of his prolonged detention and the wider Biafra agitation.
