The Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) has condemned the recent abductions of students in Kebbi and Niger states, calling the attacks an assault on civilization and the fundamental right of children to education.
In a statement issued over the weekend by Mrs. Ifedimma Nwigwe, INEE’s Country Focal Person for Nigeria, the organization described the incidents as deeply alarming and expressed solidarity with the affected families, teachers, and communities.
- “We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted students and staff. The targeting of learners and educators is a grave violation of children’s rights, undermines the right to education, and inflicts lasting psychological and social harm on survivors and communities,” the statement read.
INEE urged security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted students and staff, and to conduct thorough investigations into the attacks. The organization also called on federal, state, and local authorities to strengthen protections for schools and maintain educational continuity during and after emergencies, including providing rapid psychosocial support, trauma-informed care, and safe learning spaces for affected children.

The network further encouraged communities, faith and traditional leaders, and civil society to engage in peaceful initiatives to protect students and staff, while reminding all parties in conflicts to respect the civilian status of schools in line with international humanitarian law and Nigeria’s obligations to safeguard children in conflict settings.
INEE concluded by highlighting the urgent need for coordinated, rights-based action to protect education in emergencies, affirming its readiness to support partners in delivering lifesaving education, child protection, and psychosocial services, while strengthening preparedness and response measures to keep children learning safely.
