In a dramatic turn of events, India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following several days of escalating military tensions. The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed credit for brokering the peace deal through overnight talks.
Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
However, both Indian and Pakistani officials pushed back on Trump’s claim, asserting that the ceasefire agreement was a direct result of bilateral negotiations, not U.S. mediation.
Diplomatic Push for De-escalation
India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stated:
“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India remains firm in its stance against terrorism and will continue to act accordingly.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed the announcement, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace without referencing U.S. involvement:
“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The ceasefire reportedly began at 5 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
U.S. Role Under Scrutiny
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that both countries had also agreed to “start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.” However, no official confirmation of future diplomatic talks has come from New Delhi or Islamabad.
Rubio also mentioned that Vice President JD Vance had met separately with Indian and Pakistani leaders over the past 48 hours to push for de-escalation. He commended the leadership of both nations, stating:

Global Reactions
The development has been welcomed globally, especially given the nuclear capabilities of both nations and the potential consequences of continued hostility. International observers, however, remain cautious about how long the ceasefire will hold amid deep-rooted tensions.
