Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has finally broken his silence, declaring that he is not desperate to return to Government House, revealing that his “spirit left the seat of power long ago.”
Fubara made this known during a Night of Tributes in honour of late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, organised by the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the Royal House of Grace Church, Port Harcourt.
In what marked his first public address since his suspension by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, Fubara made several emotional and pointed statements.

“If I had my way, I wouldn’t want to return,” he said. “But many people, including the late Chief Clark, made sacrifices for me. That’s why I must stand by them.”
Fubara urged that the event should not be twisted into a political rally, especially in light of remarks from earlier speakers, many of which criticized his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and President Tinubu.
“This programme is a tribute to Pa Clark. It’s not about Sim Fubara,” he said. “Even though I respect the bishop’s message, today is not the time for political declarations. Otherwise, people will say I gathered supporters to attack the minister or the President—that is not my mission.”
Fubara added that his peace of mind and health had improved since leaving office, stating, “Just look at me—I look better now. I have peace.”
Fubara Calls for Strategic Restraint
In a statement issued by his media aide, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara called on his supporters to avoid inflammatory remarks and actions that could escalate political tensions in the state.
He emphasized that some supporters’ actions did not reflect his values of peace and lawful leadership, and warned against worsening the crisis.
“Not every battle is worth fighting,” he noted. “Let us ask ourselves—are we really pursuing peace or just shouting for nothing?”
Apostle Aggrey, Rivers Elders Call for Peace
During his homily, Apostle Zilly Aggrey quoted Bible scriptures including James 4:13-16 and Matthew 7:12, urging all stakeholders in the Rivers political crisis to embrace peace, unity, and reconciliation.
He thanked FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his past role in Fubara’s emergence and urged him to lead reconciliation efforts, while also applauding President Tinubu’s intervention in stabilising the state.
Other dignitaries at the event included:
- Chief Rufus George (Former Governor)
- Senator Benneth Birabi
- Prof. Roseline Konya
- Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe
- Senator Andrew Uchendu
- Ms. Ann Kio Briggs
- Dr. Edison Ehie, among others
