The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has vowed that the Nigeria Police Force will ensure the safe rescue of the remaining students and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State. He made this commitment during a courtesy visit to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago in Minna on Tuesday, following last Friday’s disturbing abduction of pupils and school workers.
Describing the incident as both “heartbreaking and troubling,” the IGP noted that Niger State has become a hotspot of complex and evolving security challenges that require urgent and well-coordinated intervention. He emphasized that the state remains too strategically important to Nigeria to be overlooked, assuring that the force has intensified tactical operations aimed at ensuring the safe return of the victims.
According to Egbetokun, the police have deployed additional tactical units, reinforced intelligence operations, and expanded their search network across affected areas. He reaffirmed the commitment of the force, saying: “We will bring back the remaining students and staff unhurt. So far, 50 of the abducted children have been recovered, and we are pushing forward with full determination.”
The IGP also commended the Niger State Government, traditional rulers, security agencies, and community stakeholders for their cooperation, urging them to continue providing support to combat criminal elements working to destabilize communities. He stressed that the Nigerian Police Force would not allow terrorists or bandits to advance their “cruel and destructive agenda.”

In response, Governor Bago expressed profound gratitude to the IGP and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their swift intervention and deployment of rescue teams. He acknowledged the combined efforts of various security agencies already engaged in the rescue mission and highlighted the importance of synergy in overcoming insecurity.
The governor urged residents to remain calm, prayerful, and united, warning that Nigeria’s peace, democracy, and sovereignty are being challenged. He emphasized that collective national effort remains key to preserving stability and restoring the country to the path of progress.
