The long-running political rivalry between former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has once again taken center stage, with Amaechi delivering a scathing response during an interview on ARISE TV.
Amaechi, who also served as Minister of Transportation, dismissed Wike’s recent criticisms by stating bluntly:
“I don’t want to join issues with children.”
The fiery exchange follows Amaechi’s comments at his 60th birthday celebration, where he lamented the worsening hunger and hardship in Nigeria. He stirred national attention with statements like:
“We’re all hungry… If you’re not hungry, I’m. The opposition can remove the man in power if we want to.”
These remarks didn’t sit well with Wike, who fired back during a media chat on Monday, accusing Amaechi of politicizing the hunger crisis and being “hungry for power.”
“He was a super minister. He didn’t talk about hunger then. Two years after leaving office, he suddenly cares. That’s not concern — that’s desperation,” Wike declared.
Amaechi Fires Back: “I Hired Him”
Not one to let Wike’s jabs slide, Amaechi used his ARISE TV appearance to discredit Wike’s political claims, insisting that divine intervention, judicial backing, and the people of Rivers State made him governor, not Wike.
“Ask him how he made me governor. God, Peter Odili, the judiciary, and Rivers people made me. I was once his boss. I hired him,” Amaechi stated.
He also revealed why he chose to appoint Wike as Chief of Staff rather than Commissioner for Finance, claiming he needed to “supervise him closely.”
“I didn’t want him handling the finances. I made him chief of staff so I could monitor him. He asked for commissioner for finance, and I said no.”
Taking a swipe at Wike’s perceived arrogance, Amaechi added:
“You know, he made himself chief of staff. He made himself governor. He made himself minister. He made himself local government chairman.”
“No More Respect for Family Names”
Amaechi didn’t stop there. He lamented the decline in political ethics, accusing his former ally of lacking respect for legacy.
“There’s no more respect for family names. People just do and say anything.”
