The President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Prof. Benedict Oramah, has highlighted the remarkable journey of the bank, describing it as a powerful story of resilience, innovation, and economic transformation across the African continent.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM) in Abuja, Nigeria, Prof. Oramah stated that the bank has successfully mobilized over $250 billion to support strategic sectors in Africa, despite widespread doubts and resistance from critics.

“With the unwavering support of the Nigerian Government and our numerous stakeholders, Afreximbank has emerged as a key driver of Africa’s socio-economic advancement,” Oramah declared.
Held under the theme, “Building the Future on Decades of Resilience,” the 32nd Annual Meetings served as a platform to reflect on Afreximbank’s growth from a humble beginning to becoming one of Africa’s most influential multilateral financial institutions.

- Empowered sectors are neglected by traditional financial institutions.
Acted as a financial lifeline during major crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain disruptions, and commodity shocks.
“Afreximbank’s journey is one of defiance against doubt. We believed in Africa when many didn’t,” Oramah said. “We built an institution that now leads the way in unlocking Africa’s potential.”
A Decade of Impactful Leadership
As Prof. Oramah prepares to step down after ten years of impactful leadership, he reflected on the bank’s growing role in reshaping Africa’s economic future. He emphasized that the continent must now focus on building internal strength in the face of growing global challenges such as deglobalization, rising protectionism, and geopolitical instability.

“In this age of global uncertainty, it is crucial that we pursue a development path that is authentically African yet globally relevant,” he stressed.

The 2025 Afreximbank meetings brought together African policymakers, development finance institutions, business leaders, civil society, and academics to explore strategies for deeper intra-African trade, economic independence, and sustainable growth.
Oramah urged all African institutions and experts to remain focused on the collective goal of economic liberation, saying:
