Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to Nigerians to remain patient with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring that the government’s ongoing reforms will soon yield economic prosperity.

Akpabio made the call while delivering his opening address as Chairman at the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. He encouraged citizens not to lose hope despite the current economic hardship.

  • “Let me seize this opportunity to urge my compatriots to be patient with your government as we lay again the foundations of this house. Do not despair when the winds blow strong or the scaffolding shakes. For a nation is like a mighty cathedral—it is not raised overnight, but stone by stone, prayer by prayer, hand by hand,” Akpabio said.

He further called for unity, urging Nigerians to “bind the wounds of division, banish the cynicism of despair, and walk together—Church and State, pulpit and parliament, faith and policy—towards the dawn.”

Representing President Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, reiterated that the administration is committed to stabilising the economy, attracting investment, and implementing reforms that will benefit all Nigerians.

Akume added that the Renewed Hope Agenda is designed to strengthen democratic institutions, promote inclusiveness, and ensure that no one is left behind, especially through social investment programmes.

He highlighted his administration’s poverty alleviation programmes aimed at lifting vulnerable citizens out of hardship, and urged continued Church support in delivering the dividends of democracy.

The conference, attended by Catholic Bishops across Nigeria, was graced by the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, representatives of the Pope, members of the National Assembly, and several prominent politicians, including Simon Lalong, Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh, Titus Zam, Osita Ngwu, and others.
