The convoy of former Anambra State Governor and ex-Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, was ambushed by gunmen along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North, sparking fresh alarm over rising insecurity and attacks on political figures in the state.
Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the incident, but eyewitness accounts and police confirmation indicate that the attack was well-coordinated and carried out by men disguised in police and military uniforms.
According to Ngige’s former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, the former governor narrowly escaped danger because he was not travelling with the team. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire on the pilot vehicle, injuring a police officer who was subsequently disarmed and stripped of his rifle and uniform.
A young woman who attempted to record the incident was reportedly shot dead, while a nearby shop owner who ran out during the chaos sustained gunshot wounds and is set to undergo surgery. The pilot vehicle was heavily damaged and riddled with bullets.
An eyewitness told NAIJABLOGDAILY:
“No policeman was killed. The escort leader who was shot has been operated on and is recovering well. The shop owner was lucky that the bullets didn’t hit his spine.”
The Anambra State Police Command later confirmed the attack and its connection to Ngige’s police convoy. The Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced that police units had launched a full-scale manhunt for the fleeing gunmen. He also revealed that a white Mercedes-Benz SUV snatched by the attackers was recovered during a pursuit operation.

Ikenga explained that tactical units, including the Operations Department Awka, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Akwuzu, and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) Enugu-Ukwu, engaged the attackers in a gun duel.
A statement from the Command added:
“The convoy joined forces with pursuing operatives and engaged the hoodlums, who abandoned the snatched Mercedes-Benz SUV and fled under heavy pressure. One police operative who sustained a minor gunshot injury is stable and receiving treatment.”
The police confirmed that the officers in the convoy were attached to Senator Chris Ngige.
The recovered vehicle has been taken into police custody as investigations and the state-wide manhunt continue.
The attack is being described as one of the boldest assaults on a former governor’s convoy in recent years and has intensified calls for stronger security measures across Anambra State.
