Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the establishment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps for residents affected by the recent Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun communal clashes. This move comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to provide relief and security for displaced citizens while maintaining a 24-hour curfew in the troubled areas.
Osun Communal Clashes Escalate, Forcing State Intervention
What initially began as a boundary dispute between Ifon and Ilobu on Friday quickly escalated, spreading to Erin Osun by Saturday. The unrest led to casualties, destruction of homes, and mass displacement, forcing many residents to flee to neighboring towns such as Okinni, Osogbo, and Ido Osun for safety.
The escalating violence prompted the Osun State Government to extend the curfew from 12 hours to a full 24-hour restriction to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed.
IDP Camps and Emergency Relief for Displaced Residents
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke emphasized that the IDP camps will serve as temporary shelters for those who have lost their homes. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been directed to:
✔ Set up IDP camps in each affected town, possibly in town halls or designated safe locations.
✔ Screen and transport displaced residents to the camps with support from security agencies.
✔ Provide food, relief materials, and essential supplies to those in need.
✔ Collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for additional assistance.
Security Measures and Prosecution of Ringleaders
Governor Adeleke commended security forces for their swift response and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to holding the masterminds of the crisis accountable. He directed law enforcement agencies to ensure:
✔ Arrest and prosecution of key ringleaders behind the clashes.
✔ Strict enforcement of the 24-hour curfew to prevent further violence.
✔ Surveillance and intelligence gathering to restore long-term peace in the affected communities.
