Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in Nigeria’s political space, stating that he personally does not keep grudges against anyone.

Speaking in Abuja during a requiem mass for the late former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Jonathan praised Ogbeh’s forgiving nature, describing him as a leader who always chose peace over bitterness.

Rewriting his core statement, Jonathan said:

  • “Chief Ogbeh never believed in revenge. He always felt the past should remain in the past. That is also my philosophy. When people wrong me, I let go. I believe in moving forward, not holding onto grudges.”

He further recalled how their friendship began during his tenure as Bayelsa State deputy governor, when Ogbeh was the National Chairman of the PDP, stressing that the late politician treated him with respect and friendship at a time when deputy governors were often sidelined.

Jonathan urged Nigerian leaders to adopt humility, forgiveness, and bridge-building, stressing that these values are vital for uniting the country and driving sustainable development.
