The Gombe State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has plunged deeper into crisis following the suspension of the state chairman, Comrade Adamu Modibbo, over allegations of abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and undermining internal party structures.

The development was announced during a press conference in Gombe on Saturday, where a faction of the party’s executive committee accused Modibbo of sidelining key stakeholders and operating the party like a personal enterprise.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved faction, the SDP Welfare Secretary, Usman Degri, said:

“Since assuming office, Comrade Modibbo has hijacked the party, witch-hunting loyal members and frustrating efforts to strengthen the SDP in Gombe.”

Degri further alleged that Modibbo failed to provide financial transparency, despite receiving donations, and continued to use his private residence as the party’s operational base, even though funds had reportedly been allocated for a functional secretariat.

• “There has been no financial report shared with either the executive or the party’s broader membership. Party decisions are made unilaterally and announced at the national level without input from state stakeholders,” Degri added.

The faction described the suspension as a necessary step to save the party from collapse and restore internal order. They called on the national leadership of the SDP to intervene and restructure the party’s Gombe chapter.

In line with this, Mr. Aaron Yakubu, the party’s State Secretary, was named as Acting Chairman, while Ambassador Lukman Adamu Elkanem, former Assistant PRO, was appointed as Acting State Secretary.

Modibbo’s Camp Fires Back, Suspends Key Opponents

In a swift reaction, a faction loyal to Adamu Modibbo fired back, announcing the suspension of four key members over what it described as “gross misconduct and attempts to destabilise the party.”

Addressing the media, the State Publicity Secretary, Abdulkadir Kumo, said the suspension followed a meeting of the State Executive Committee. Those suspended include:

• Aaron Yakubu (Assistant Secretary)
• Usman Yahaya (Assistant Publicity Secretary)
• Lukman Adamu Elkanem (Member, Contact & Mobilisation Committee)
• Musa Muhammad Ali (Chairman, Gombe LGA SDP)

These individuals, according to Kumo, are barred from all party activities pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

“No one is above party rules. These suspensions are essential to preserve our unity and discipline,” Kumo stressed.

In the interim, Muhammad Adamu (popularly known as Auwal SMS) was appointed as the acting chairman of the Gombe LGA chapter.

Kumo also warned the suspended individuals against parading themselves as officials, calling it a breach of party protocols.

A disciplinary committee has been set up to investigate the situation. Members include:

Kumo issued a strong statement calling for unity among party members while warning against internal sabotage.

“Let it be known — the SDP is not for sale, not for hijack, and not for compromise. Those dancing to the tune of our opponents should exit now. We remain focused and fearless.”

With both factions claiming legitimacy, the Gombe SDP is now deeply divided, raising concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party observers are urging the national leadership of the SDP to step in quickly to avoid further disintegration in the state chapter.
