Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, has explained that his resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet was a personal decision aimed at protecting his integrity and preventing distractions to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Nnaji tendered his resignation on Tuesday amid growing controversy surrounding his academic records and allegations of certificate forgery. The Presidency confirmed his resignation the same day.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Nnaji said he decided to step down after “deep reflection and consultations with family, associates, and well-meaning Nigerians.” He described the allegations against him as politically motivated and malicious falsehoods intended to tarnish his reputation.
- “These unfounded allegations and media distortions have not only caused personal distress but have also begun to distract from the vital work of the ministry and the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President,” Nnaji said.
He clarified that his resignation should not be seen as an admission of guilt, but as a principled decision to uphold due process and ensure ongoing judicial proceedings are not compromised.
- “My decision to step aside is not an admission of guilt but a move to respect the sanctity of due process and preserve the integrity of judicial proceedings currently before the court. In the end, justice will prevail, and history will vindicate the just,” he stated.
Nnaji added that he could not, in good conscience, allow personal controversies to overshadow the objectives of the Tinubu administration. He highlighted that his reputation, built over five decades of hard work and service to humanity, remains intact.

- “I will not allow distractions to cast a shadow over the noble goals of this administration. My life’s work has been anchored on honour, diligence, and service to the Nigerian people,” he said.
The former minister expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, pledging continued loyalty and support for the government’s vision of building a renewed, innovative, and technologically advanced Nigeria.
Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, served until his resignation amid ongoing investigations into alleged procurement irregularities in his ministry. He and the Enugu State Government had also recently clashed over claims that he presented forged certificates — allegations he firmly denies.
