Catholic missionary priest based in The Gambia, Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, has criticised Nigerians for what he described as a muted response to the killing of Rev. Fr Matthew Eya of Nsukka Diocese.
NAIJABLOGDAILY earlier reported that Fr. Eya was shot dead on September 19, 2025, while on his way to his parish.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Fr. Ugwu contrasted the reactions to the September 10 shooting of American conservative commentator Charlie Kirk with the apparent silence surrounding the murder of Fr. Eya.
According to him, the U.S. government acted swiftly after Kirk’s shooting, with the president addressing the nation immediately and security operatives arresting the suspect within two days.
- “Fast forward to September 19th, that was when Fr. Matthew Eya of Nsukka Diocese was shot on his way to his parish. It is five days now since he was shot and we are already moving on like nothing happened. How many places have you seen the news online? What has the government of Nigeria said? Is the president even aware of the shooting?” he lamented.
Fr Ugwu further questioned the lack of updates from the Enugu State Government and security agencies.
He noted that while the state government condemned the killing and announced a ₦10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter, there has been little follow-up communication.

- “Three days ago, I read that the Enugu state police announced that they arrested 38 persons in connection with the shooting. These 38 people, according to them, are under screening to ascertain the killer. It is day three now. Does anyone have updates on whether the screening has been finalised or if it is still ongoing?” he asked.
The priest stressed that the life of a Catholic priest should not be treated casually, urging Nigerians and authorities to demand accountability in the investigation.
