The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to international airlines, declaring that sanctions await any carrier caught flying passengers into the country without valid Nigerian visas, Landing Cards, or Exit Cards.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a high-level stakeholders’ engagement on Friday in Lagos. The meeting focused on the implementation of the Nigerian E-Visa, Landing, and Exit Card systems, introduced on May 1, 2025.
“Nigeria Is Not a Dumping Ground” – FG Vows to Enforce Visa Rules
Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized that while Nigeria is making entry easier through the E-Visa platform, national security will not be compromised.
“Before anybody comes to Nigeria, please verify their visa—not just proof of payment or ticket,” he declared. “This is standard in countries like the UK, US, and Canada—and now, Nigeria.”
Airlines Face Sanctions for Violations
The Minister urged the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to take enforcement seriously, noting that airlines must align with the 2025 Nigeria Visa Policy or face penalties.
He emphasized the collaborative role of the NCAA, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the Ministry of Interior in strengthening aviation security and border control.
E-Visa System Records Over 5,600 Approvals Since Launch
- As of May 22, the NIS has processed 5,814 E-Visa applications, with 5,671 approvals, 66 rejections, and 62 queries—a testament to the growing adoption of the system.
- Tunji-Ojo explained the system’s barcode-based Landing and Exit Cards would bolster Nigeria’s database on travelers and boost internal security.
“Applying for a visa doesn’t guarantee entry. Applicants must meet clear criteria,” the Minister added.
NCAA Backs E-Visa Rollout for Improved Border Control & Investor Confidence
Chris Najomo, Director-General of the NCAA, hailed the e-Visa system as a milestone in aviation security and facilitation.
“This aligns with ICAO Annex 9 standards and will attract investors and tourists while maintaining security and efficiency,” he said.
