The Federal Government has introduced a N10 million loan initiative to support academic and non-academic staff across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Known as the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), the scheme aims to boost the welfare, financial stability, and professional development of staff members. According to the Federal Ministry of Education, each eligible staff member can access loans of up to N10 million, with a cap set at 33.3% of their gross annual salary.

Loan funds may be applied to essential needs such as transportation, medical support, and micro-enterprise projects like poultry farming.

The Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, disclosed the initiative in a statement released on Sunday, noting that it was unveiled at a high-level stakeholder meeting in Abuja.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond welfare and is designed for long-term empowerment.

“TISSF is not just about welfare. It is about empowerment. We are ensuring that our education workforce is supported to live well, grow professionally, and continue contributing meaningfully to institutional excellence,” he said.

According to the statement, the programme will be run in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, which will oversee the disbursement process to ensure transparency and accountability.

A monitoring and evaluation system has also been embedded into the programme to ensure effective implementation and long-term success.

The unveiling attracted support from major stakeholders, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the Bank of Industry, as well as vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts, who welcomed the initiative as a timely morale booster for tertiary education personnel.
