The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day across Nigeria.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the government congratulated Nigerians for their enduring commitment to democracy, marking 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” the statement read.
26 Years of Civilian Rule
Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the journey since 1999 as one of resilience, strength, courage, and renewed hope for Nigerians. He emphasized that democracy remains a work in progress, but the current administration is committed to fostering its growth through transparency and inclusion.
“The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope renewed more than ever,” he added.

The Minister also reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s dedication to upholding democratic values, particularly the freely-expressed will of the people in determining the political, economic, and social path of the country.
What is Democracy Day?
June 12 was officially declared Democracy Day in 2018, in honor of Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest. The date symbolizes the struggle for democratic freedom and civil rights.
