FG Begins Major Overhaul of NYSC Scheme, Introduces Teachers’ and Medical Corps.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a comprehensive review of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, with plans to establish specialized Teachers’ Corps and Medical Corps to better address national development needs.

This move comes amid growing concerns over the safety of corps members, outdated infrastructure, and the continued relevance of the NYSC scheme in today’s fast-changing socio-economic environment.

The review committee was inaugurated on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, with stakeholders from government agencies, civil society, and the private sector in attendance.

NYSC Reform Targets Youth Empowerment and National Development

Olawande highlighted the importance of NYSC since its inception in 1973, stating that while the scheme has been crucial in promoting national unity and youth development, it must now evolve to meet new challenges.

He said, “The issues of corps members’ safety, infrastructural challenges, and the broader question of the scheme’s relevance in an increasingly dynamic socio-economic environment are among the key concerns. However, these challenges also present opportunities for urgent and visionary reforms.”

The minister noted that the committee’s job is to:

  • Assess the NYSC structure and policies
  • Propose ways to improve safety, innovation, and impact
  • Recommend changes to the laws governing the NYSC
  • Suggest better funding and monitoring frameworks

The committee’s report is expected to shape the future of the NYSC and will be submitted to the ministry within a stipulated timeframe.
