FG Announces Reopening of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on Monday.

The Federal Government has confirmed that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will officially reopen for flight operations on Monday, May 6, 2025.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had initially shut down the airport on April 18, 2025, after a major rupture was discovered on a critical section of the runway, requiring emergency repairs. The urgent maintenance work commenced on April 22 and was scheduled for completion before the first week of May.

During the temporary closure, all scheduled flights were diverted to nearby airports, causing significant travel disruptions.

In a statement released by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the authority confirmed that rehabilitation works on the runway had been successfully completed. FAAN’s engineers have cleared the runway for safe landing and takeoff operations.

FAAN expressed its gratitude to passengers, airlines, and all stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the closure. The authority also apologized for any inconvenience caused, stressing that safety was the top priority behind all actions taken.

The reopening of Akanu Ibiam International Airport is expected to restore normal flight schedules and boost economic activities in the South-East region of Nigeria.
