In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, has lifted an earlier order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The court affirmed that the process is constitutionally valid, reinforcing the civic rights of her constituents in Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The ruling follows a legal battle where some constituents, led by Anebe Jacob Ogirima, challenged the legitimacy of the recall petitions, alleging fictitious signatures. On Thursday, the court granted an interim injunction barring INEC from accepting or acting on any recall petition until a proper review was conducted.
However, in Friday’s judgment, the court ruled that constituents have the legal right to initiate a recall, provided due process is followed. It also emphasized that the exercise should be conducted peacefully and lawfully.

The case, which has drawn national attention, stems from Senator Natasha’s political dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during which she accused him of sexual harassment. The latest court ruling now paves the way for further proceedings on the recall process.
Meanwhile, the court has adjourned the case to May 6, 2025, for further deliberation.
