Nigerian singer and songwriter, Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, has revealed how her collaboration with Afrobeats superstar Davido on the hit track “Kante” came about.

Speaking on The Nancy Isime Show, Fave disclosed that Davido personally reached out to her via Instagram after she had already recorded the track months earlier.

• “I had already recorded this song before, like months before. Davido hit me up on Instagram and was like, I’m wrapping up my album and I would love you to be on it. And I don’t want it to be one of those songs where it’s like, even though it’s Davido featuring Fave, I still want it to feel like our song,” she said.

According to Fave, she sent Davido three different songs, and he eventually picked “Kante” to feature on his Timeless Album.

The fast-rising star also spoke about her love for songwriting and the challenges she faced growing up in a strict African home where her parents discouraged her from pursuing music for fear it would affect her academics.

• “As a child growing up in an African home, I get it. My parents were very strict. Mommy, I’m sorry. My dad is very, very strict. That’s why they didn’t really allow me to enhance my writing and singing abilities because they felt it would distract me in school. But regardless, I was always writing poems and songs because it’s something I truly love,” she explained.

However, Fave admitted that “Kante” was one of the few songs she didn’t put too much lyrical depth into since it was designed to be a danceable Afrobeats gbedu.

• “I think Kante is probably one of the songs that I wasn’t trying to be deep on. Because I just felt like ‘Na gbedu’, you don’t really need to put too much lyrics in it,” she added.

The collaboration with Davido has since become one of Fave’s biggest highlights in her music career, solidifying her place as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising female artists.
