Former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has backed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as necessary to restore peace and order.
In a nationwide address on Tuesday night, President Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, for six months. He also suspended all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd.) as the new administrator to oversee the state’s governance.
The drastic move follows months of political conflict between Governor Fubara and his former political godfather, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Fani-Kayode wrote:
“The declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State is a bold and commendable move that will return sanity to the peace and stability of the state.
I also believe this will go a long way in bringing all the major players in the conflict back to their senses.

The comment has sparked nationwide debate, with some seeing the emergency rule as a violation of democratic processes, while others, like Fani-Kayode, view it as a decisive intervention in a dangerous power struggle.
The political face-off between Fubara and Wike has divided Rivers politics and threatened the stability of the oil-rich state.
