EPL Drama: Fernandes’ Late Penalty Wins it for Man United as Brazil’s Cunha Suffers Injury Blow.

Manchester United’s rollercoaster victory over Burnley came with mixed emotions on Saturday as captain Bruno Fernandes scored a last-gasp penalty to seal a 3-2 win at Old Trafford, while striker Matheus Cunha suffered a muscle injury that ruled him out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

United’s afternoon began brightly but nearly unraveled after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made another costly mistake, allowing Burnley’s Jaidon Anthony to score a late equaliser. However, deep into stoppage time, Anthony pulled down Amad Diallo inside the box. Referee Sam Barrott initially waved play on, but following a lengthy VAR review, the penalty was awarded.

Fernandes, who missed from the spot a week earlier against Fulham, kept his composure and buried the ball into the bottom corner to hand new manager Ruben Amorim his first Premier League victory in charge of Manchester United.

But amid the celebrations, United were hit with bad news as Matheus Cunha limped off in the 28th minute with a muscle injury. The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) later confirmed that after consultations with United’s medical team, Cunha had been withdrawn from the squad to face Chile and Bolivia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has since called up Samuel Lino of Flamengo as Cunha’s replacement. The 26-year-old forward joins a growing list of absentees, including Joelinton, Alex Sandro, and Vanderson, who have also pulled out through injury.

Despite the setbacks, Brazil remain third in the South American qualifying group and has already secured its place in the World Cup. They will host Chile at the Maracanã Stadium on September 4 before traveling to El Alto to face Bolivia at high altitude on September 9.

For Manchester United, the win provides a much-needed confidence boost after a shaky start to the season, but the loss of Cunha to injury will be a major concern for both club and country.
