Enugu Government Resolves Decades-Long Land Dispute Between Isienu-Amagunze and Akpugo Communities.

The Enugu State Government, through the State Boundary Committee, has successfully resolved a longstanding and volatile land dispute between the Isienu-Amagunze community in Nkanu East Local Government Area and the Ndiuno Akpugo community in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The boundary conflict, which nearly escalated into violent confrontation on December 11, 2024, was ignited by claims from residents of Isienu-Amagunze that Chief Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, had encroached on their ancestral farmland under the guise of executing a federal project.

The situation worsened when bulldozers reportedly destroyed over six hectares of cassava and yam farms, triggering tensions between the two communities.

Boundary Officially Demarcated by Seasonal Stream

Following a government promise to investigate and resolve the matter, the Enugu State Boundary Committee last weekend released its findings. It officially recognized the Iyi-Ezi seasonal stream as the true boundary line between the two communities. The stream also serves as the administrative boundary between Nkanu East and Nkanu West LGAs.

The announcement was made at the Government House, Enugu, in the presence of representatives from Isienu-Amagunze, Ndiuno-Uwani Akpugo, and Ndiagu-Uwani Akpugo communities, as well as key government stakeholders.

Among the dignitaries present were:

  • Deacon Okey Ogbodo, Commissioner for Chieftaincy, Local Government, and Rural Development
  • Representatives of the Attorney General, the State Surveyor General, and the Ministry of Justice
  • Barr. Solomon Ejim, Secretary of the State Boundary Committee
  • HRM Ikechukwu Asadu (Igwe Ogadagidi), Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council
  • Local Leaders React Positively to Resolution
  • Hon. Anthony Okey Mbah, representing Nkanu East Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, praised the resolution, affirming that it aligns with the longstanding claim of the Isienu-Amagunze community.

  • “This ruling confirms our position and contradicts the Akpugo community’s claim that the boundary should extend beyond the Nkanu East LGA headquarters at Atavu River,” Mbah stated.
  • He also applauded Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his leadership and timely intervention, crediting the swift response for preventing what could have turned into a bloody communal clash.
  • “This is a historic resolution that has brought peace and clarity after decades of tension. We deeply appreciate the efforts of the State Government,” he added.

The peaceful resolution is expected to restore calm, foster unity, and promote sustainable development between the once-feuding communities.
