ENUGU —
The recent launch of Enugu Air by Governor Peter Mbah has sparked excitement across the South East, with prominent figures describing the state-owned airline as a groundbreaking development for regional growth, business, and connectivity.
Chief Dr. Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe—CEO of First Choice Afro Villa Ltd, Mburubu Construction Company Ltd, and Igwe-elect of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom—praised the initiative as a visionary step that will redefine infrastructure, commerce, and mobility across the region.
Speaking shortly after the commissioning of Enugu Air on Monday, Onuokaibe said:
- “What Governor Mbah has done with Enugu Air is not just about launching an airline—it’s about connecting economies, simplifying business logistics, and making the South East more attractive to investors.”
The airline, which is the first state-owned airline in the South East, begins operations with three Embraer aircraft (E170 and E190), a move Onuokaibe described as both futuristic and practical.
“For years, lack of air connectivity discouraged investment in the South East. That bottleneck has now been removed. Enugu is not just a state capital anymore; it’s becoming a true regional aviation and investment hub,” he noted.
Chief Onuokaibe lauded the planned flight connections to Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano, calling it the “golden triangle” of domestic air routes that will boost inter-state commerce, ease of doing business, and access to skilled labor.
He added that the ripple effect of Enugu Air will be felt across multiple industries, including hospitality, logistics, construction, technology, and education.
“The more efficiently we can move people and goods, the faster our economy grows. This also boosts the confidence of diaspora investors who now have direct access to the region,” he said.

On the choice of aircraft, he emphasized that the Embraer models are ideal for Nigeria’s regional travel needs due to their efficiency and adaptability.
He concluded by urging other South East governors to take inspiration from Governor Mbah’s transformative leadership:
- “Leadership is about solving long-standing problems. Governor Mbah has done that. It’s time the rest of the region follows his lead.”
