Emergency Rule Protest: Police Fire Tear Gas at Demonstrators in Port Harcourt.

Tension escalated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday morning as operatives of the Rivers State Police Command fired teargas to disperse protesters gathered at Isaac Boro Park.

The protest, led by the Take-It-Back Movement, was organized to reject the alleged declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, which the group described as unconstitutional and repressive.

By 9:00 a.m., protesters had assembled at the park but were quickly met by a heavy police presence, leading to confrontations. Eyewitnesses reported that the officers stormed the venue and deployed tear gas to disrupt the peaceful gathering.

Despite the clampdown, defiant protesters, many of them youths, chanted, “Nobody can tell us where not to gather, we are Rivers people,” according to a report by Channels TV.

The Nigerian Police Force had earlier advised the organizers to cancel the protest, citing security concerns. However, the Take-It-Back Movement proceeded with the demonstration, insisting on their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

The protest is part of a broader nationwide campaign by civil society groups demanding an end to political repression, economic hardship, and perceived abuse of state power.

So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or arrests, but the situation in Port Harcourt remains tense.
