Newly sworn-in Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced plans to launch a full-scale investigation into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, who governed the state from 2016 to 2024 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During a victory parade held at the Government House in Benin City on Friday, Governor Okpebholo revealed that his administration will soon establish a Commission of Inquiry to audit Obaseki’s financial dealings and governance style.
Key Allegations: N47m vs. N51m Scandal
Governor Okpebholo cited alleged financial irregularities, including a case where:
- “A university in this state received ₦47 million, while a consultant was paid ₦51 million under Obaseki’s watch. That was not good enough. They wanted to continue this way, but God helped us push them out.”
Civil Service Continuity: No Purge Yet
Okpebholo emphasized that, unlike the norm with new administrations, he has retained civil servants, including the Head of Service and multiple Permanent Secretaries who served under Obaseki.
- “Since I came into office, I have not sacked anyone. I’m working with those I met in the system,” he said.
Officials Under Watch: More Probes Coming
The governor vowed that top officials from the Obaseki administration will also be interrogated regarding their roles and decisions over the last eight years.
He accused the PDP and its 2024 governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, of stockpiling funds for elections and court battles, insisting that the people deserve accountability.
Deputy Governor and Allies React
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, speaking at the event, expressed gratitude to the governor for helping the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure victories across multiple court cases. He urged the government to now focus on delivering development to the Edo people.
Philip Shaibu: It’s Time to Work
Also in attendance was Comrade Philip Shaibu, former Deputy Governor, who celebrated the victory and declared it a new dawn for Edo State:
“It’s time to work. Edo people will be proud they voted for Senator Monday Okpebholo.”
