Edo Community Bans Beef Sale, Threatens Mass Relocation Over Herdsmen Killings.

Elelu village in Erah community, Owan East LGA of Edo State, has banned the sale and consumption of beef in protest against the incessant killings and kidnappings of their kinsmen by suspected herdsmen.

During a large protest on Saturday, both young and elderly residents took to the streets to voice their anger, mourning loved ones recently lost and demanding urgent intervention from the Edo State Government.

“We Are Under Attack” — Community Cries Out

The residents, some carrying belongings on their heads, declared that they can no longer live in fear and hunger. They vowed to relocate en masse to the Edo Government House for safety and shelter if nothing is done.

A community spokesperson, Fred Enaikhe Aleburu, revealed that in just two weeks, seven people have been kidnapped or killed. Among the dead is Vigilante Commander Victor Ogedengbe, whose corpse is still in the mortuary.

Aleburu said:

“Our mothers can no longer go to the farm. Our youth are hunted. Our elderly live in fear. This is not just insecurity — this is a slow genocide.”

Demands from the Edo State Government

The protesters called on the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect lives, listing several urgent demands:

  • Permanent security checkpoints at all roads and entry points
  • Forest clearing operations to flush out criminal elements
  • Emergency food relief and support for displaced farmers
  • A visible and sustained security presence across the villages

They warned:

“If our villages are no longer safe, we will sleep at the doorstep of leadership until we are heard and protected.”

Why the Beef Ban?

As part of their protest, the community declared a permanent ban on beef, saying herdsmen hiding behind cattle have taken their peace, food, and loved ones.

“We will not continue to support a system built on our blood and tears,” said Aleburu.
