Easter Message: Bishop Kukah Urges Tinubu — “Bring Nigerians Down From This Cross of Suffering”.

In a powerful Easter message, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, delivered a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to urgently address Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, hunger, and national despair.

Speaking from Sokoto, Kukah likened the suffering of Nigerians to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, declaring that the people have been “dangling and bleeding on this cross of pain and mindless suffering” for too long.

“We Are a Nation on the Cross” – Kukah’s Strong Words

“We all admit that you neither erected this cross nor did you effect our collective crucifixion… but Mr. President, bring us down from this cross of evil,” Kukah urged.

He lamented the prevailing hopelessness, rising insecurity, and the loss of faith in government solutions. The cleric noted that marauders, bandits, and predators now threaten to overrun the country, turning farming and daily survival into dangerous tasks.

Hunger and Insecurity: A Double Threat

Bishop Kukah acknowledged the removal of fuel subsidy as a necessary move, but he criticised the government’s reliance on palliatives, urging instead for food security to be made a fundamental human right.

“Mr. President, hunger, sickness, and desolation stalk the land… Bring us down from this painful cross of hunger.”

He called attention to how insecurity has metastasized into a national cancer, warning that kidnapping and killings are no longer isolated acts but symptoms of a broader collapse of national security.

“Are Nigerians being sacrificed to an unknown god?” Kukah asked, challenging both the military’s capacity and the motives of Nigeria’s leaders.

Call for Renewed Hope and Action

While the message was deeply critical, Kukah ended on a hopeful note, reminding Nigerians that 2025 has been declared the “Year of Hope” by Pope Francis, and encouraging collective efforts to push back the darkness threatening the country.

“We are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden… Mr. President, bring us down from this cross of shame,” he concluded.

Kukah’s Easter message is a wake-up call, not just for leadership, but for citizens and religious communities to unite in rebuilding a Nigeria where justice, peace, and dignity reign.
