More than two decades into democratic rule, political scientists have concluded that Nigeria’s foreign policy has not significantly improved. According to the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), the nation’s global influence remains limited despite hopes that democracy would enhance its international engagement.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by Professor Hassan Saliu, national president of NPSA, the group lamented that Nigeria’s return to democracy since 1999 has failed to translate into stronger foreign relations.
Unmet Expectations in Foreign Relations
“With over 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, many expected Nigeria to gain more international clout, especially in Africa,” the association said. “However, relations with countries, particularly in the West African sub-region, remain strained, and Nigeria has been reduced from a continental giant to just a sub-regional player.”
The association also raised concerns about Nigeria’s relationship with China, describing it as “subservient” and “one-sided,” with agreements that citizens view with suspicion. While relations with Western nations appear stable, NPSA noted that Nigeria’s independence in foreign policy remains questionable.
They cited former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration as having taken a hostile posture toward Nigeria, further straining diplomatic ties.
Domestic Failures Fuel Foreign Policy Setbacks
NPSA identified internal governance issues as the root cause of Nigeria’s weakened foreign policy. “A country’s domestic politics shapes its image abroad. Poor management at home leads to poor perception abroad,” the group stated.
To change the narrative, the political scientists called for:
A full review of Nigeria’s foreign policy to reflect global realities.
- Improved funding for foreign affairs initiatives.
- Strengthening of research units within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Greater public engagement through debates and transparency in foreign policy matters.
- Reevaluation of international memberships to focus on bodies that boost national visibility.
- Amendments to the 1999 constitution to redefine Nigeria’s foreign policy goals and make them measurable.

Conclusion
The NPSA concluded that unless Nigeria fixes its domestic challenges, it will not command the global respect and influence it seeks.
