Kano, – Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has lashed out at politicians who defect to rival parties after benefiting from the electorate’s support, describing the act as the “greatest political sin” in democracy.
Kwankwaso made the strong remarks during a meeting at his Miller Road residence in Kano, where he welcomed a fresh wave of defectors from the Takai Local Government Area of Kano South into the NNPP.
His comments come amid a recent string of high-profile defections from NNPP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, member representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure federal constituency.

The former Minister of Defence did not mince words, branding defections after electoral victories as “the highest form of betrayal” against the people, especially the poor who voted in the hope of change.
“This is the highest form of betrayal in a democratic setting. When vulnerable people vote for you and you turn around to join their oppressors, it is a political sin of the highest order,” Kwankwaso said.
He emphasized that the Kwankwasiyya ideology remains a people-oriented movement, rejecting money politics and rooted in grassroots mobilization.
“Some people collected spaghetti and N2,000 to elect someone. But in Kano, the poor stood firm. If it had been left to those selling their votes, the NNPP wouldn’t have won,” he noted.
Reflecting on the 2019 and 2023 general elections, Kwankwaso said the party has learned valuable lessons and grown stronger. He warned that undermining the Kwankwasiyya movement is a mistake many politicians regret.
“Fighting the Kwankwasiyya movement is a grave mistake. One may not understand until he engages in that fight—and then he’ll realize how tough it is,” he declared.
He congratulated the new defectors for joining the NNPP and urged all supporters to remain united, committed, and focused on social justice.

“Whether you got an appointment or not, whether you got a contract or not, we are all in this for the right reasons. The poor now understand everything, and that is our strength.”
With growing political tension in Kano and beyond, Kwankwaso’s statement serves as a warning to opportunistic politicians and a call for political integrity in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
