Defamation Allegation: Yahaya Bello Petitions IGP, Demands Prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over what he described as defamatory and inciting statements made by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly.

In a petition submitted through his solicitor, N.A. Abubakar, Esq, Bello urged the police to invite Senator Natasha to substantiate her claims or face arrest and prosecution for criminal defamation, false accusation, and incitement to public disturbance.

According to Bello’s legal team, the senator made serious allegations during her “Homecoming Rally” held on April 1, 2025, in Okehi LGA, where she accused the former governor of plotting her assassination and conspiring with other top political figures.

Quoting her alleged speech, Akpoti claimed:

“Akpabio told Yahaya Bello… he should try and kill me… but make sure it doesn’t happen in Abuja…”

Through a second legal team led by Chief R.O. Balogun, SAN, Bello issued a 14-day ultimatum demanding a formal retraction and public apology in two national newspapers. Failure to comply, they warned, will lead to civil and criminal legal action.

The petition also invoked the Cybercrimes Act of 2015, Penal Code Sections 114 and 140, and other laws penalizing the spread of false and harmful information online, noting that video clips of the senator’s remarks were shared widely across social media.

Bello’s legal team said:

“She has caused grave damage to our client’s reputation… and endangered public peace by inciting ethnic and political tensions in Kogi Central.”

The petition took a personal turn, describing Akpoti-Uduaghan as:

“Unhinged… possessed of a schizophrenic disorder… with manic narcissism and wild hallucinations…”

Bello stated that while he tolerated her past attacks during his time in office, he no longer feels obliged to do so and now seeks full legal redress.

He called on the IGP to take swift action, warning that failure to act could embolden others to use political platforms to spread dangerous falsehoods for personal gain, which could destabilize the country’s fragile democratic structure.
